Our Story

Founded by Dan Zauderer, a former middle school teacher in the South Bronx, the initiative began after witnessing a student and his grandmother searching for food in trash bins. This heartbreaking experience revealed the harsh reality of food insecurity in a community surrounded by abundance. The community refrigerator initiative has since expanded from a single fridge to multiple locations, ensuring that families have access to fresh food.

Impact

Grassroots Grocery has made a significant impact by reaching over 1,200 families each Saturday and operating more than 30 community-led food distribution sites. Over 2 million pounds of fresh produce have been rescued, transforming food access in the Bronx.
