About Northwest Indiana Public Broadcasting Inc
In the mid-1980s, a dedicated group of citizens recognized the need for a local voice in Northwest Indiana. This vision led to the establishment of Lakeshore Public Television, which first aired in November 1987 as WYIN Channel 56. Over the years, Lakeshore Public Television has become the sole source for local news, sports, and weather, as well as cultural events and community issues.
Our Journey
From humble beginnings, where a small team delivered local news with a personal touch, Lakeshore Public Television has evolved significantly. The station's commitment to covering stories that matter to residents has remained steadfast. In the 1990s, programs like "Indiana Now" brought community leaders and state lawmakers into viewers' homes, fostering a connection between citizens and their representatives.
As technology advanced, so did Lakeshore Public Television. The installation of a powerful transmitter in 2003 allowed the station to reach a wider audience, ensuring that the voices of Northwest Indiana were heard loud and clear. The transition to digital broadcasting in 2004 further enhanced the viewing experience, adding multiple channels and improving signal quality.
Lakeshore Public Radio
In 2009, Lakeshore Public Radio was launched to complement the television station, providing localized news and information through programs like "Lakeshore This Morning" and "The Dan Dakich Show." The station has since expanded its offerings, incorporating NPR programming to deliver national and international news while maintaining a focus on local issues.
Community Engagement
Lakeshore Public Media is more than just a broadcasting entity; it is a community resource. Through collaborations with organizations like the League of Women Voters and Valparaiso University, the station has strengthened its commitment to civic engagement and education. The future of Lakeshore Public Radio includes amplifying local voices and addressing topics that resonate with the community.
Impact Statement
Lakeshore Public Media serves as a vital resource for lifelong learning, celebrating diversity, and engaging in civic concerns, enriching the lives of residents in Northwest Indiana.
