Our Story

Northern Light School, founded in 1989 by visionaries Jennifer Diaz, Karen Bell, Nance Tovar, and Michelle Lewis, began with just 12 students in Oakland, California. The founders were inspired by historical figures like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, aiming to create a nurturing environment that emphasizes academic excellence and social justice.

Impact

With over $1 million awarded in financial aid annually, Northern Light School boasts a remarkable 99% acceptance rate for graduates into private high schools, often with full or partial scholarships. The school’s diverse faculty, with 2/3 identifying as people of color, enriches the educational experience.
