Our Story

Founded in 1974 by Dr. Yitzhak Bakal, the North American Family Institute was established to address the abusive practices within Massachusetts' juvenile justice system. Starting with a single outreach program, NAFI has grown to operate over 110 programs across eight states, focusing on community-based care for children, youth, and adults facing mental health and behavioral challenges.

NAFI has transitioned from institutional care to community-based services, becoming a national model for non-institutionalized care. The organization supports individuals in crisis, helping them overcome trauma and developmental challenges, significantly improving their quality of life.
