Our Story
Over 140 years ago, a group of compassionate citizens recognized the need to protect work animals from inhumane treatment. This led to the formation of the Portsmouth Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals in 1872, which later became the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As one of the first ten such societies in the United States, the NHSPCA has remained committed to its mission of preventing cruelty to animals through investigations and legislative advocacy. Today, the organization has expanded its programs to include animal sheltering, adoption, humane education, and more, ensuring that every animal receives the care it deserves.
