Our Story

Founded in 1962 by composer John Cage and passionate mushroom enthusiasts, the New York Mycological Society fosters a deep appreciation for fungi in New York City and beyond. With over 1,300 members, the society organizes engaging activities such as mushroom walks, lectures, and festivals.

Our Impact

Documenting over 1,500 species of fungi in New York City, the society leads a comprehensive project to track urban fungi diversity. Community outreach and education thrive through events like the Fungus Festival and Myco Film Festival.
