New Roots
EIN: 27-0700459 · Louisville, KY
Our Story
Fresh food is a basic human right, and New Roots was born from the frustration of limited access to organic produce in underserved neighborhoods. Founded by Karyn Moskowitz and a group of passionate friends, this grassroots organization began with a simple idea: to create Fresh Stop Markets that serve everyone, regardless of income. With Karyn's investment of her unemployment check and a commitment to cooperative economics, New Roots officially became a nonprofit in 2009.
Our Impact
Since its inception, New Roots has seen a remarkable growth in community engagement, with the number of individuals purchasing shares skyrocketing by 1000 percent from 180 to 2145 in 2021. In that year alone, 715 families accessed fresh, healthy, organic produce, with 77 percent of shares purchased by those with limited resources or through SNAP Benefits, generating $160,000 in revenue for local farmers.
