Our Story

The New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter began as a response to the urgent needs following Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, Jackie Silverman established the shelter to provide a safe haven for women and children, ensuring they could stay together during their time of crisis. Over the years, the organization has evolved, moving to a larger facility in Central City and expanding its services to support intact and single father-led families.

In December 2023, the shelter acquired a new facility in Mid-City New Orleans, formerly the Lucky Inn Hotel. This upgraded location will significantly enhance operations, allowing for increased capacity and improved amenities, including private bathrooms and a large multipurpose space for programming. This pivotal move marks a significant step towards advancing the mission of supporting families in need.

Impact

Since its inception, the New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter has served over 4,500 individuals from diverse backgrounds. With a remarkable success rate of 98%, clients are able to stay out of homelessness permanently, thanks to the robust wraparound services and the Transition Assistance Program that supports former residents for 18 months.
