Our Story

Established in 1910 as the New Jersey Blind Men’s Club, the New Jersey Blind Citizens Association (NJBCA) has dedicated over a century to serving the blind and visually impaired community. Founded by a visionary group in Hoboken, the organization aimed to provide essential instruction and support, enabling individuals to lead fulfilling lives while fostering public acceptance.

In 1930, NJBCA launched Camp Happiness, a free summer camp for blind adults, located on the scenic Sandy Hook Bay. This initiative allowed participants to explore independence in a safe environment, forming lasting bonds with others who shared similar experiences. As demand for services grew, Camp Happiness evolved into the Wobser Day Camp in 1987, focusing on year-round programming that enriches the lives of participants through creative activities and social interaction.

Today, NJBCA continues its mission, offering programs that enhance mobility skills, promote artistic expression, and provide vital medical advice. The organization is committed to supporting individuals experiencing vision loss, ensuring they have access to resources that foster personal growth and community connection.
