Our Story
New Hope Community Development of Acadiana, known as New Hope Lafayette, was founded by John and Kristine Newman in 2010, driven by a passion to support at-risk youth in North Lafayette. The journey began in 2007 when John, an assistant pastor, started working with local youth. In partnership with the Lafayette Consolidated Government, the organization launched its first program in June 2011, providing academic enrichment and character lessons to children in need.
As the program evolved, it became clear that many of these children were facing toxic stress, which adversely affected their behavior and academic performance. In response, New Hope Lafayette pioneered trauma-informed mentoring in the city, training volunteers to understand and address these challenges. This innovative approach led to significant improvements in the children's attitudes, behaviors, and academic success.
Over the years, John Newman has shared insights on the impact of poverty and trauma through lectures and presentations, including a TEDx talk on the importance of relational networks for at-risk children. In 2019, he collaborated with local professors to establish the Acadiana PACEs Alliance, promoting a trauma-informed community for all children.
