Our Story

New Detroit was established in response to the civil unrest of 1967, which revealed deep-rooted social issues in the community. At the request of Michigan Governor George Romney and Detroit Mayor Jerome Cavanagh, business leader Joseph L. Hudson, Jr. brought together a diverse coalition to address the challenges facing the city. Since then, New Detroit has served as a vital platform for collaboration among business, civic, grassroots, and religious leaders, all dedicated to fostering positive change in the region.

Our Impact

New Detroit is committed to dismantling racism in the Metro Detroit area by transforming hearts and minds and reforming policies and systems. Through education, training, and community programs, the organization tackles racism at personal, institutional, and systemic levels.
