Our Story

In 1974, a passionate group of citizens united to protect New Bedford’s historic County Street from destructive state plans. This grassroots effort led to the formation of the New Bedford Preservation Society, dedicated to safeguarding the city’s architectural treasures through education and advocacy.

Impact

Since its inception, the New Bedford Preservation Society has awarded over 500 historic markers and Elm Awards, recognizing individuals committed to preserving the city’s rich architectural heritage. The Society has also planted over 280 trees through the Re-Leaf Program and produced 37 educational videos on local history, amassing over 19,800 views.
