Our Story
Founded in 1952 by a group of dedicated parents, New Avenues to Independence began as the Parents Volunteer Association, aiming to provide educational, vocational, and recreational experiences for children with disabilities. Recognizing the social injustice of institutional living, these pioneers sought to create alternatives that would allow individuals with disabilities to thrive in community settings.
In 1971, the organization established the first private, non-profit group home for individuals with disabilities in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Over the decades, New Avenues expanded its services to include community-based care, transitional respite, children’s programs, therapies, nursing support, recreational opportunities, and Mainstream Housing rental assistance throughout Northeast Ohio. In 2000, the organization rebranded to New Avenues to Independence, Inc. to better reflect the diverse needs of those served.
In 2005, the organization returned to its roots by establishing a Day Services program, which expanded in 2007 to include vocational services that connect individuals with disabilities to meaningful employment opportunities.
