About the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund

Founded by former President Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth in South Africa. Established in 1995, the Fund has mobilized over R36 million to support more than 780 projects, focusing on child health, safety, and empowerment.

Our Story

Driven by a profound love for children and a commitment to ending their suffering, Nelson Mandela donated a third of his salary during his presidency to create the Fund. Initially operating as a grant-making organization, the Fund provided immediate support to address the urgent needs of children and families. However, recognizing the limitations of this approach, the Fund evolved its strategy in 1999 to foster community involvement and address organizational capacity issues.

In 2000, the Fund launched the Sakha Ikusasa strategy, which repositioned it as a development and advocacy agency. This new approach emphasized comprehensive responses to the HIV and AIDS epidemic, partnering with the Department of Social Development and civil society organizations. Over the years, the Fund has focused on key areas such as child wellbeing, leadership, skills development, and care for orphaned and vulnerable children.

Impact

The Fund has made significant strides in improving the lives of children and youth, with a focus on sustainable solutions that empower communities. The establishment of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in 2005 stands as a testament to the Fund's commitment to child health and wellbeing.
