About Natya Dance Theatre

Founded by Artistic Director Hema Rajagopalan, Natya Dance Theatre has been a beacon of South Asian cultural heritage in Chicago for over forty-seven years. Hema's journey began in Chennai, where she trained under esteemed gurus and quickly became a celebrated performer. After relocating to Chicago in 1975, she recognized a need to connect the local Indian community with their rich cultural roots through dance. What started as informal lessons in her living room has blossomed into a professional company and training academy, renowned for its dedication to the classical art form of Bharata Natyam.
