Our Story
Founded in 1972, Native American Connections began as a grassroots initiative to support Native American men facing homelessness and addiction. Joseph Hayes, alongside friends Lewis Blackwater and Jack Dewney, established a drop-in center in Phoenix, providing essential 12 Step meetings. By 1978, the organization expanded its services and became one of the first licensed behavioral health agencies in Arizona. Under the leadership of Dede Yazzie Devine, NAC broadened its focus to include women and families, ensuring comprehensive support for all.
Impact
Today, Native American Connections serves over 1,500 individuals and families annually, offering a wide range of behavioral health services. With a commitment to cultural heritage, NAC has developed 459 units of housing across 10 communities in central Phoenix, positively impacting the lives of 10,000 people each year. The organization continues to innovate, utilizing tax credit housing programs to create sustainable living environments.
