About National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster

Founded over 50 years ago in response to the challenges faced by disaster organizations after Hurricane Camille, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) was established to enhance coordination among various groups serving disaster survivors. Prior to its inception, assistance was often disorganized, leading to duplication of efforts and unmet needs. In 1970, seven national disaster response organizations came together to create a unified approach to disaster response, resulting in the formation of National VOAD.

Our Impact

Today, National VOAD is a coalition of over 70 reputable national organizations and 56 State/Territory VOADs, representing countless local and regional groups. In 2019 alone, National VOAD members contributed over $1.3 billion in donated labor, mobilizing nearly 10 million volunteers who dedicated over 48 million hours to response and recovery efforts across the United States.

Why Donate?

Your generous contributions are vital for enhancing disaster response efforts. While cash donations are preferred, they ensure that experienced and vetted professionals can effectively utilize your support. National VOAD does not accept direct cash donations but encourages contributions to its member organizations actively assisting Afghan refugees and other urgent needs.

Join the Cause

Support the mission of National VOAD by donating today. Your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by disasters. Together, we can build resilient communities and provide hope in times of need.
