About National Black Theatre

Founded in 1968 by Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, National Black Theatre (NBT) stands as the first revenue-generating Black art complex and the longest continually running Black theater in New York City. With over $10 million invested in more than 350 original works by Black artists, NBT amplifies the intersectional stories of Black life.

Impact of NBT

Since its inception, NBT has received numerous accolades, including NYTimes Critics Picks, Obie Awards, and a TONY award. The theater made Broadway history with the co-production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play FAT HAM, becoming the third Black theatre company to achieve this milestone.
