Empowering Black Children and Families in Colorado
The National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) has a rich history rooted in the commitment to early childhood development. The journey to establish the Denver Affiliate chapter began with three passionate early childhood experts: Cassandra Johnson, Dorothy Shapland, and Sena Harjo. With the support of the Buell Early Childhood Leaders Network, they initiated a community forum in 2014, bringing together leaders from various sectors to discuss the potential of creating an Affiliate Chapter. This collaborative effort led to the chartering of BCDI-Denver on June 6, 2015.
BCDI-Colorado focuses on empowering Black children and families through comprehensive programs that address early learning, health and wellness, family engagement, and literacy. The organization is dedicated to advocacy efforts that aim to achieve positive outcomes for Black children and their families. By partnering with local organizations, BCDI-Colorado works tirelessly to close gaps in services and create a supportive network for the African American community in Denver and beyond.
In 2019, BCDI-Denver expanded its reach, rebranding as BCDI-Colorado to serve communities throughout the state. The organization has conducted thorough assessments of community needs, enhancing its infrastructure to better serve families. BCDI-Colorado envisions a future where every Black child, family, and community in Colorado thrives.
