About the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions
Founded in 1983, the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) emerged in response to amendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. These amendments enabled local governments to receive financial assistance through the Certified Local Government program, which necessitated the establishment of local preservation ordinances and commissions. NAPC was created to provide a platform for these commissions to address shared challenges and to serve as a national advocate for their unique needs.
Impact of NAPC
Through its comprehensive education and training programs, including the biennial FORUM conference and the Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP®), NAPC has empowered thousands of commission members and staff, fostering robust local preservation initiatives.
