Our Story
In 1985, a group of passionate individuals, including Elvia Rubalcava, Clifford J. Reuschlein, and Gregorio Luna, faced a frustrating lack of information and support for mental health services while waiting in an emergency room. This experience ignited their commitment to create change, leading to the establishment of the El Paso Alliance for the Mentally Ill in 1986, now known as NAMI El Paso. Overcoming numerous challenges, they laid the groundwork for a grassroots organization dedicated to transforming the community's understanding of serious mental health conditions.
In 2013, NAMI El Paso experienced significant growth after receiving the People Empower El Paso Grant, thanks to the efforts of former Board President Richard Salcido and the collaboration with Family Service of El Paso. Today, NAMI El Paso continues to harness the passion of dedicated volunteers to advocate for mental health awareness and support.
