Our Story
My Own Book Fund was established by the Freeman-Harrison Family Foundation in 1999 to inspire a love of reading among disadvantaged children in New York City. The program provides field trips to bookstores for third-grade students in participating NYC public schools, allowing them to choose and purchase their own books. This initiative enhances child literacy in high-needs communities by empowering children to select, purchase, and read their own books.
Impact
During the 2013-14 school year, a formal evaluation confirmed that My Own Book participants became more avid and enthusiastic independent readers. Over 90% of teachers observed improvements in reading enthusiasm and comprehension. Nearly two-thirds of students who were not independent readers reported reading on their own after participation.
Why Donate?
Donations to My Own Book Fund go 100% towards book purchases, as the Freeman-Harrison Foundation covers all operational expenses. Contributions significantly impact children's literacy by providing them with the opportunity to own books, crucial for their academic success.
