Our Story
In 2011, Chicago violinist Sarah Dupuis and social worker Joi Truman co-founded MUSIC Inc., a transformative program dedicated to providing high-quality music education and social emotional support to students in Chicago’s west side communities. Born from a desire to restore vital arts education resources, MUSIC Inc. began with a generous donation of twenty-five violins from Fritz Ruiter and Sons Violin Shop. The pilot program engaged twenty-five first-grade students and their families, laying a strong musical foundation that would support their growth through 8th grade and beyond.
By fostering lasting relationships with families, MUSIC Inc. has empowered students to overcome challenges and build personal confidence through music. The systemic divestment in arts education has long affected children's development and future opportunities, but MUSIC Inc. is changing that narrative. Starting students at a young age equips them with the skills necessary to compete with peers from more affluent communities. Remarkably, 75% of MUSIC Inc. students participate for an average of five years, opening doors for future careers or lifelong hobbies.
