Our Story
The Museum at Eldridge Street is located in the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue, built in 1887. This remarkable structure stands as a testament to the aspirations of immigrants, serving as a vital heritage center for people of all backgrounds. As the first synagogue in America purpose-built by Eastern European immigrants, it provided a spiritual home for Jewish newcomers. Rediscovered in 1986, the synagogue underwent a nearly 20-year restoration, culminating in its rededication as a museum in 2007. Today, it continues to welcome visitors and hosts cultural events, reinforcing its role as a sanctuary and community center.
