Our Story
For generations, the Murphy family has exemplified a commitment to legal excellence and community service. Founded in 1982 by John H. Murphy, Sr., the Murphy Family Charitable Foundation continues the legacy of the nation’s oldest historically black family-owned newspaper, The Afro-American. This publication has been a beacon of hope, fighting against racial and economic injustices in Baltimore City.
Judge William H. Murphy, Sr. furthered this mission by establishing a law practice in Cherry Hill in 1948, advocating for equality within the legal system. His dedication to social justice was mirrored by his wife, Madeline Murphy, as they became active community organizers. Their son, Judge Billy Murphy, Jr., expanded the firm’s criminal practice and served as a Circuit Court judge, solidifying the family’s reputation for fighting for the rights of the underrepresented.
Today, Hassan Murphy, the next generation, leads the firm with a strategic vision, ensuring that the Murphy legacy continues to thrive. The foundation aims to empower passionate individuals who can create meaningful change in their communities, ensuring access to top legal advocates for those in need.
