About Mountain Homeless Coalition

Founded in 2016, the Mountain Homeless Coalition (MHC) emerged from a community effort to address homelessness in the San Bernardino County mountain region. Initially formed by volunteers from local churches and civic organizations, MHC has grown into a vital nonprofit dedicated to providing permanent housing and essential services to those experiencing homelessness.

Our Story

In January 2016, a group of dedicated volunteers conducted the Point in Time Count (PITC) to assess the needs of the homeless population in the mountain areas. This initiative revealed a significant gap in services for the mountain communities, prompting the formation of MHC. Officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in July 2017, MHC has since worked tirelessly to advocate for the needs of the homeless in the region.

Through collaboration with the county’s Homeless Partnership, MHC successfully established a separate Mountain Homeless Provider Network, ensuring that the unique needs of mountain residents are addressed. With a seat at the County’s Interagency Council on Homelessness, MHC continues to push for resources and support for vulnerable populations.

Impact

In 2020, MHC received $1.1 million from the state’s Project Homekey program, enabling the purchase of six cabins and two manufactured homes in Big Bear. These properties, known as Georgia Street Cabins, now provide permanent housing for individuals and families at risk of homelessness. MHC’s dedicated housing navigators work closely with clients to ensure they have the support needed to thrive.
