Our Story
The Montgomery City-County Public Library began its journey on June 19, 1899, in Montgomery, Alabama, as a subscription library above a drug store. Founded by dedicated citizens, it aimed to create a free institution for cultural and educational purposes. Over the years, it has transformed into a comprehensive public library system, supported by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and local governments. The library has expanded its services, including bookmobiles and multiple branches, to serve diverse communities, growing its collection to over 600,000 volumes.
