The Story of Mixteca Organization
Mixteca Organization, Inc. was born from the urgent need to address the HIV/AIDS crisis within Hispanic immigrant communities in the United States. In the mid-1990s, while awareness about AIDS was increasing in developed nations, many Hispanic communities remained unaware of the disease's risks and prevention methods. In 1991, Dr. Gabriel Rincón recognized this gap and began organizing informational talks about HIV/AIDS in Spanish. By 2000, alongside Facundo Méndez and Alejandra Rodríguez, he formalized these efforts, establishing Mixteca Organization, Inc. as a non-profit community center dedicated to breaking down cultural, social, and economic barriers that hinder community advancement. Today, Mixteca serves as a vital resource for thousands of Latino families in Brooklyn, fostering a supportive environment for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
