Mission House: A Beacon of Hope for the Homeless

Mission House was born from the collective dream of the Beaches community, where faith and compassion unite to serve those in need. For over a decade, dedicated members and volunteers from Christ Episcopal, Palms Presbyterian, St. Paul’s Catholic, and St. Paul’s Episcopal churches provided food and clothing to the homeless from their facilities. In February 1997, these churches, along with over 162 generous donors, purchased the property at 800 Shetter Ave. in Jacksonville Beach, establishing what is now known as Mission House.

Today, Mission House stands as the only day facility dedicated to assisting homeless individuals in the Beaches area. The primary goal is to help those experiencing homelessness transition off the streets and into productive, self-sufficient lives. Through compassion, faith, and tailored programs, Mission House provides essential services to meet the unique needs of each client.

Comprehensive Support Services

Clients enrolled in the Crisis Care Program have access to meals, showers, clean clothing, and personalized case management. The time spent with case managers is crucial, as it allows for a deeper understanding of each individual’s journey and the challenges they face. The face of homelessness has evolved, influenced by economic conditions, family backgrounds, and unforeseen life events. Mission House is committed to assisting clients in planning their path back to independence.

Mission House serves not only adult men and women but also families with children. When a family arrives, immediate assessments are conducted to address their needs, collaborating with community partners to secure temporary shelter or housing.

Healthcare Access for the Uninsured

A significant barrier for many homeless individuals is the lack of medical care. In partnership with Baptist Beaches Medical Center, Mission House established a medical clinic that opened in October 1998, funded by the proceeds from the First Annual Beach Ball. The clinic operates every Tuesday evening and Friday morning, providing essential medical services to homeless and uninsured low-income adults, staffed by a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers.

Community Support and Sustainability

Mission House thrives on the generosity of the community, relying on donations from individuals, churches, foundations, and corporations, as well as the efforts of over 500 volunteers. The support received is vital for sustaining the programs that make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.
