Our Story
In the heart of Georgetown County, South Carolina, deep pockets of poverty have led to poor school performance among children. Recognizing this critical need, the founders of Miss Ruby’s Kids sought to create a solution that would improve school readiness and ensure successful high school completion. Inspired by an article in Parade magazine, they adopted the Parent-Child Home Program (ParentChild+), a proven model that has transformed communities for over fifty years.
Since its inception in October 2003, Miss Ruby’s Kids has expanded its reach from five families to over sixty, focusing on two and three-year-old children at a pivotal stage of their intellectual development. Trained Early Learning Specialists visit homes twice a week, introducing educational routines and fostering verbal interaction between parents and children through creative play sessions. The program provides families with books and educational toys, enriching their learning environment.
In addition to home visits, Miss Ruby’s Kids offers a group model for family childcare providers, ensuring that even more children benefit from a literacy-rich environment. In 2009, the organization launched the Education Mentor Program, providing in-school support for program graduates through trained volunteer mentors.
