About Mile High Freedom Band

Founded in April 1984 by local musician Robert Brown, the Mile High Freedom Band (MHFB) began as a small group of musicians dedicated to creating a welcoming space for individuals of all backgrounds to come together through music. Originally named the Denver Gay and Lesbian Community Band, the organization quickly evolved, adopting its current name and making its public debut at the 1984 Denver Gay Rodeo. The band’s first major performance at the 1985 Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade garnered significant media attention, highlighting the presence of a ‘gay band’ in the event.

Resilience Through Challenges

Throughout its history, MHFB has faced numerous challenges, including societal discrimination, the AIDS crisis, and hate crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals. Despite these obstacles, the band has remained steadfast in its mission to engage, educate, and entertain. Over the years, MHFB has hosted various events, including the Lesbian and Gay Band Association’s annual conference, and has celebrated milestones such as its 25th anniversary with a resurgence in membership and audience participation.

Expanding Horizons

In 2018, MHFB expanded its reach by introducing the MHFB Youth program, which has successfully awarded $4,500 in scholarships to LGBTQ+ youth. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 posed significant challenges for arts organizations worldwide, but MHFB adapted by pivoting to virtual performances, ensuring that no events were canceled. This innovative approach allowed the band to reach larger audiences globally, culminating in a successful 37th season.

Thriving Community Engagement

As the Mile High Freedom Band approaches its 40th anniversary, it continues to thrive with nearly 250 members and over 45 performance events each season. The organization remains committed to its mission of making positive contributions to the LGBTQ+ community and its allies through engaging musical events that support performers of all abilities.
