Our Story

Founded in 1979 by Ruth Valenti and Essie Dabrusin, Mid Hudson Animal Aid Inc began as a foster care organization dedicated to rescuing abused and homeless animals in Newburgh. These remarkable women often risked their own safety to save dogs and cats left behind in unsafe situations, funding veterinary expenses and basic needs from their own pockets. Recognizing the urgent need for a permanent facility, MHAA opened its doors in May 1990, starting with just 15 feline residents. Over the years, the sanctuary has grown, thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the community's support.

Our Impact

As a no-kill cat sanctuary, MHAA provides a safe haven for abandoned and abused felines in the Hudson Valley and beyond. Cats are cared for in a free-range environment while awaiting their forever homes. The organization is committed to educating the public about responsible pet ownership and promoting spaying and neutering to combat animal overpopulation.
