Our Story
Since 1989, Mexicantown Community Development Corporation has been dedicated to preserving and promoting Latino culture, history, and art in Southwest Detroit. Guided by the principle that a strong ethnic identity fosters economic strength, the organization trains residents in entrepreneurship, helping them reclaim economic ownership of local businesses. The construction of the I-75 freeway in the 1960s severed community ties, but Mexicantown CDC has worked tirelessly to restore them. In 2007, the organization led the revitalization of the area with the $17.5 million development of the Welcome Center and Mercado buildings, which serve as a vibrant hub for cultural and economic growth.
