Our Story

The Metropolitan Washington Ear, Inc. (MWE) was founded in 1974 by Dr. Margaret R. Pfanstiehl, who faced the challenges of blindness due to retinitis pigmentosa. Recognizing the urgent need for a radio reading service for the visually impaired in Washington, D.C., she established MWE to provide essential reading and information services. For over 50 years, MWE has been dedicated to improving the lives of blind, visually impaired, and physically disabled individuals in the Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. areas.

Impact

MWE significantly enhances access to information and community engagement for individuals with visual impairments through free reading and information services, as well as independent living skills training.
