In the wake of the devastating 1998 Atlantic hurricane, which left nearly 11,000 dead and 2.7 million homeless in Nicaragua, a dedicated team of missionaries led by Larry Lallo embarked on a mission to rebuild lives. Recognizing the importance of sustainable service, Lallo and his team not only constructed homes for survivors but also empowered them with the skills to build their own futures. By selecting a core group of villagers, they taught essential construction techniques, fostering a culture of self-reliance and community support.

This innovative approach led to the establishment of the Mercy Economic Development International Corporation (MEDIC) in 2001, aimed at providing transformative help across the globe. With a focus on micro-enterprise development, MEDIC has successfully launched initiatives in countries like Benin and Ghana, raising over $20,000 to support local entrepreneurs. Today, MEDIC continues to operate with a Christ-centered mission, uniting people of faith to uplift communities worldwide.
