The Story of Mercy Coalition
In 2010, a devastating fire at the Broderick Christian Center revealed the deep need for support among West Sacramento's homeless population. Within 48 hours, local churches united to provide daily lunches, a response that would lay the groundwork for the Mercy Coalition. This grassroots effort transformed into a sustained commitment, with over 80,000 free lunches served since 2013.
As funding for local nonprofits dwindled, the Coalition's mission expanded. In 2014, it played a pivotal role in the Bridge 2 Housing initiative, helping over 70 individuals transition to permanent housing. The Coalition also established the first overnight shelter in West Sacramento's history, the Winter Warming Centers, which provided 76 nights of shelter and 880 bed nights to those in need.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coalition adapted its services, delivering meals to individuals in hotel isolation as part of the City/County-sponsored "Project Roomkey." This adaptability showcases the Coalition's unwavering commitment to serving the community, driven by a diverse coalition of faith and a shared purpose.
