Our Story

In 1908, two local physicians, Drs. Wheelwright and Schenck, faced a life-or-death situation on the outskirts of Southampton Village. With no time to transport a patient to the nearest hospital, they performed an emergency operation by the light of a kerosene lamp in a small attic room. This pivotal moment ignited a vision for a dedicated healthcare facility in Southampton, leading to the establishment of a community hospital.

After months of discussions among local physicians, a meeting on August 22, 1908, resulted in the hiring of Nurse Charlotte Lillywhite and the creation of a small dispensary. The demand for care quickly outgrew the initial space, prompting the Southampton Hospital Association to purchase the Hervey J. Topping house in 1909. With generous support from local residents and summer visitors, the hospital opened its doors in 1913, designed to grow alongside the community it serves.
