About Media Impact Funders

Media Impact Funders traces its roots back to the Council on Foundations, originally established as an affinity group for funders interested in the power of film to highlight social issues. Since its inception in 1984, the organization has evolved significantly, reflecting changes in technology and media behavior. Renamed from Grantmakers in Film, Video & Television to Grantmakers in Film & Electronic Media in 2008, it was formally incorporated to advance the field of media arts and public interest media funding. In 2012, the organization adopted its current name, Media Impact Funders, and has since expanded its strategy to encompass a broad range of media funding interests, including journalism, immersive technologies, and media policy.
