McKemie Place, established in 2007, is the only emergency shelter for unaccompanied women in Southwest Alabama. Founded after a tragic incident highlighted the urgent need for such services, it became an independent nonprofit in 2010, named in honor of James 'Jim' McKemie. In 2020, the organization relocated to a permanent facility, enhancing its ability to serve homeless women.
Each year, McKemie Place provides over $4 million worth of services, assisting approximately 450 women in need.
