Our Story

In October 2015, during a mission trip to Kumulani Chapel in Lahaina, founder Brian Nelson discovered the alarming housing crisis and rising number of unhoused individuals on Maui. With Hawaii facing the highest per capita rate of homelessness in the United States, Brian, along with local advocates Gary and Michele Lincoln, initiated the Maui Rescue Mission. Drawing from his extensive experience in rescue missions nationwide, Brian envisioned a unique approach to address the needs of the unsheltered community.

Innovative Solutions for a Unique Challenge

After 23 months of in-depth research and conversations with various agencies, it became evident that traditional shelter models were insufficient for Maui's unique circumstances. This led to the creation of a groundbreaking mobile resource center, providing essential services such as private hot showers and laundry facilities. The mission focuses on building trust and facilitating healing for individuals facing physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges.
