Our Story

The Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C. was co-founded in 1961 by Dr. Franklin E. Kameny and Jack Nichols, marking the inception of the first gay civil rights organization in the capital. This pioneering group conducts original archival research and educational outreach, focusing on the often-overlooked legal, political, and policy history of the LGBTQ+ community.

Through its efforts, the Mattachine Society has played a vital role in preserving and interpreting LGBTQ+ history, conducting the first gay rights protests in Washington, D.C., and enhancing the understanding of LGBTQ+ rights through archival activism.
