Our Journey of Compassion
Mary's Mercy Center began its mission in the mid-1980s, inspired by a vision from the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center under the guidance of Fr. Michael Barry. Motivated by the teachings of Jesus, the organization started reaching out to the poor in local communities, initially providing food and financial assistance for utility bills in local parks. This humble beginning led to the establishment of a soup kitchen at Our Lady of Fatima Church in San Bernardino.
As the need grew, partnerships formed with local churches, including the Lutheran Church of Our Savior and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, which expanded the kitchen and dining facilities. By 1990, Mary's Table was serving over 5,000 hot meals each month, becoming a sanctuary for the homeless, offering rest, fellowship, and renewal.
In 1996, the organization broadened its services to include free medical screenings, a clothes closet, and an emergency food bag program. The purchase of a building on Roberds Ave. in 1992 marked a significant milestone, leading to incorporation as a non-profit public benefit corporation. With generous support from the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, an old convent was transformed into Veronica's Home of Mercy, which opened in 1995. A larger facility, Veronica's Home of Mercy II, opened in 2009, thanks to the support of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the City of San Bernardino.
In 2022, Veronica’s Home of Mercy was renamed Mary’s Haven, reflecting its ongoing commitment to serve those in need. The opening of Mary’s Village in 2020, funded by a substantial grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, marked another significant achievement. This 30,000 square foot facility provides transitional housing, onsite case management, and supportive services for homeless men, helping them break the cycle of substance abuse and homelessness.
Today, Mary's Mercy Center stands as one of the largest homeless service providers in the Inland Empire, partnering with various agencies to restore dignity and purpose to the homeless, the poor, and the marginalized. The complexities of homelessness and poverty require diverse solutions tailored to the individuals served, and together, significant differences are being made in countless lives.
