Founded in 1948 by Matthew H. McCloskey, Jr., the Martin de Porres Foundation is dedicated to developing black lay leadership in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia through education. Initially focused on providing scholarships to neighborhood children, the foundation has expanded its mission to include partial college scholarships for African American adults and funding for religious studies and evangelization programs.
In 2023, the foundation supported 23 Catholic institutions, sent 100 delegates to the National Black Catholic Congress, and granted 7 education and pastoral scholarships, showcasing its commitment to empowering African American Catholics.
