Our Story

In the 1950s, options for individuals with developmental disabilities were scarce. Tom and Anne Sell, parents of a daughter with Down syndrome, recognized the need for better support and convened a meeting in their Needham home. This gathering led to the establishment of a preschool in 1956 at Carter Memorial Methodist Church, serving twelve children for just $1 a month. Today, the Charles River Center operates 28 group homes, provides job placement services, and offers a variety of programs for over 950 children and adults in the Boston MetroWest area.
