Our Story

The Maritime Heritage Alliance began as a passionate group of friends dedicated to preserving the unique wooden boats of the Great Lakes. Starting in a vacant fire hall in Traverse City, Michigan, the organization acquired vessels in need of restoration and began teaching essential maritime skills. The first project, a 23’ Replica Mackinaw boat named Gracie L, was completed in 1982 and can still be seen sailing the bay today. In 1985, the Alliance built a replica of the historic Schooner Madeline, further solidifying its commitment to maritime heritage.

Impact

Serving over 200 families annually, the Maritime Heritage Alliance collaborates with local nonprofits like Child and Family Services and local Scouts, providing educational opportunities that foster self-reliance and community engagement.
