Our Story

The Marine Science Institute was founded in 1970 by Robert and Carolyn Rutherford to provide students with hands-on experiences in their local bay environment. With a commitment to fostering curiosity and environmental responsibility, the Institute has grown from serving 4,000 students in its first year to educating approximately 50,000 students and adults annually.
