For over fifty years, the Marathon Fire Department Emergency Squad operated as an all-volunteer EMS agency. In response to critical manpower shortages in the late 1990s, the Marathon Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc (MAVAC) was established. This transition allowed for the hiring of career paramedics and the ability to bill for patient services, ensuring that the community receives the highest standards of emergency medical treatment.
MAVAC provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance services across a 135 square mile coverage area, serving residents of Marathon, Lapeer, Freetown, Willet, Virgil, and Lisle, along with mutual aid to neighboring districts throughout Central New York.
