Uplifting Black Musical Treasures
Providing Music Education
Fostering Community Connection Through Music

Our Story

The Mama Foundation for the Arts was established in 1983 by Vy Higginsen, inspired by the success of the musical 'Mama, I Want to Sing!' and the urgent need for arts education after the cut of programs in local schools. This foundation aims to uplift Black musical treasures and create a thriving legacy institution in Harlem, inviting an intergenerational and interracial community to be seen and heard through music.

Our Impact

Since its inception, the Mama Foundation has positively impacted over 10,000 youth and 500,000 community members, reaching one million audience members globally. This initiative fosters cultural connection and community growth in New York City and beyond.
