Our Story
Founded in 2012, MALAYA Filipino American Dance Arts has redefined the portrayal of Philippine dance in America. Under the visionary leadership of Executive Director Anna Lisa Gutierrez de Guzman and Artistic Director Peter de Guzman, MALAYA has become a vibrant hub for Philippine culture, showcasing folk dances and traditional music that resonate with authenticity and innovation.
With a commitment to research and education, MALAYA has participated in numerous art festivals, including the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC), where original repertoires based on field research were presented. The company gained recognition in the LA Times for its participation in the 2018 NOW Festival at the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT), marking a significant achievement for a traditional dance company.
In 2019, MALAYA proudly represented the Philippines at the ITOTIA World Festival in Los Angeles, further solidifying its role as a cultural ambassador. The organization actively engages with the local community through workshops, consultations, and lectures, collaborating with groups such as SIPA, UCLA’s Samahang Pilipino, and USC’s Troy Phi.
In February 2019, MALAYA completed a transformative dance and music immersion tour in the Philippines, studying the T’boli culture and training in traditional Kalinga music. A highlight of this tour was an immersive workshop of Pangalay with master artist Ligaya Amilbangsa, a Magsaysay Awardee.
