Our Story
Rooted in prayer and the vision of a family seeking a better future for their child with special needs, Madonna Learning Center was established in 1969 in Memphis, Tennessee. Robert Winfield, inspired by his son’s needs, reached out to local parishes to advocate for a school dedicated to children with developmental disabilities. Sister Mary Mark Graf, with her experience from the Marian Day School in Indiana, answered this call, leading to the creation of a faith-based educational environment.
Initially named Madonna Day School, the center opened its doors with just 21 students at Saint Peter’s Home for Children. Over the years, it has grown and evolved, now serving as the only private independent school in the Mid-South for students aged 4 through adulthood with disabilities. The center emphasizes a therapeutic environment with a small student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring personalized attention and support.
Impact
Madonna Learning Center has proudly celebrated over 50 years of service in the Memphis area, providing essential educational resources and support to children and adults with disabilities. Each year, it costs approximately $23,000 to educate a student, yet parents contribute only $14,700 in tuition. The difference is made up through the generosity of the community, which is vital for sustaining specialty programs that empower students to achieve their goals for independent living.
